Jiwa Merdeka: Embrace the Spirit of Freedom & Unity

Merdeka, our Independence Day, is more than just a historical event—it’s a celebration of our collective identity as Malaysians. Growing up, Merdeka was a time when my family would gather around the television, watching the vibrant parades and listening to the echoes of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s iconic seven shouts of “Merdeka!” That word, etched in our nation’s history, has always symbolised freedom, unity and resilience.

With this year’s slogan, “Jiwa Merdeka,” Merdeka takes on a deeply personal meaning for me. “Jiwa Merdeka,” or the “Spirit of Freedom,” resonates within every heartbeat of our nation, reminding us that independence is not just about being free from colonial rule but about embodying the values of freedom in our daily lives.

For me, “Jiwa Merdeka” represents the courage to stand up for what’s right, the compassion to care for one another, and the resilience to overcome the challenges we face as a nation. It’s about embracing our differences and finding strength in our diversity.

As we celebrate the 67th year of our independence, I reflect on how “Jiwa Merdeka” inspires us to keep the spirit of freedom alive in our hearts and actions. It’s a call to nurture a sense of oneness and purpose, to strive for a Malaysia where every individual can thrive, free from prejudice and inequity. Merdeka is more than just a moment in history; it’s a living spirit that guides us towards a better future for all

Happy Independence Day, everyone!
